2 january 2024 News Heading: Men in Engineering Still Own Top CAT Scores
With male engineers repeatedly scoring high in CAT exams, concerns over gender discrepancies reemerge.
In the release of CAT 2023, male engineers bagged the highest scores. 14 high scorers made the 100 percentile; in that, 11 were male engineers. This gender bias in results is a recurring issue; deeply look into the reasons behind it.
In 2023, there will be 2.3 lakh male registrations for the CAT exam, compared to 1.17 lakh female registrations.
Female participation can partly explain the gender-skewed results but this is not the only one. The pattern of the CAT exam, analytical abilities, gives an apparent edge to engineering students who excel in these areas due to their academic background.
Bhimaraya Metri, Director of IIM Nagpur, especially with a tech-focused education, generally in the Analytics and Data Interpretation sections of CAT. However, the underrepresentation of women in the perfect scorers doesn’t question their competence.
The prevailing lack of diversity compels us to question whether the CAT exam structure needs modification. Proposed solutions include lowering the required percentile for greater inclusivity and awarding additional points to students from diverse backgrounds. The conundrum, nevertheless, requires a broader, more thoughtful discourse.
